St Mary’s Choir

St Mary’s Newmarket relaunched its choir in May 2023 primarily to sing at the weekly Parish Mass on Sundays at 9.45 am. However, there may also be opportunities to sing occasional Choral Evensong services plus the joy of singing at Christmas, Easter and other special festivals throughout the year.

We are currently quite small in number and seeking new members in all voice parts as regular or occasional singers – all age groups welcome. There are no formal auditions, membership is free and all music is provided. Previous choral experience and an ability to read music would be welcomed but these are by no means essential. More importantly, we ask for an enthusiasm for singing and a willingness to learn and to help others. Come along at any of the following times and sing with us.

Thursday evenings
Practices from 7.00 pm to 8.00 pm
We aim for weekly practices whenever possible. Please check this page and the church Facebook page for any future date changes.
Please note: There will be NO choir practices on Thursdays 21 and 28 December and 4 January

Sunday service singing
Pre-service rehearsal in church at 9.00 am (in Turner Hall if the bells are ringing)
Sung Parish Mass at 9.45 am

Occasional Choral Evensong and other services
Open to all singers in the area. Dates, times and rehearsals will be advertised here

The choir repertoire covers a variety of traditional church music ranging from plainsong to more modern compositions including hymns, psalms, service settings, short choir pieces and occasional anthems with opportunities for solo and unaccompanied singing.

Unlike other singing groups which may work towards specific concert dates, a church choir must be ready to provide new music on an ongoing basis throughout the liturgical year and so choir life is always very busy and great fun!
